Temple University is a major public research institution located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is recognized for its commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education to students from all backgrounds and is classified as an R1: Doctoral University for its very high research activity. Its mascot, Hooter the Owl, reflects the university’s original evening school roots—serving “night owls” who worked during the day. School colors are cherry and white.

Brief History:

  • 1884 – Founded by Baptist minister Russell Conwell as a night school to provide working-class Philadelphians access to higher education. Classes were initially held in the basement of Grace Baptist Church.

  • 1888 – The institution was incorporated as The Temple College.

  • 1907 – Gained university status, officially becoming Temple University.

  • 20th Century – Expanded significantly with the creation of professional schools, including the School of Law, School of Medicine, and Tyler School of Art.

  • 1965 – Became a state-related institution, receiving public funding while maintaining its own governance—similar to Penn State, Pitt, and Lincoln University.

  • Recent Years – Temple has become nationally and internationally recognized for academic excellence, research, athletics, and community engagement, while retaining a mission rooted in accessibility and urban impact.
