SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1880 in New Orleans and later relocated to Baton Rouge in 1914, Southern University and A&M College stands as one of the most historic and influential Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the nation. Established to expand educational opportunities for African Americans in Louisiana, Southern became the state’s first public institution of higher education created for Black students. For more than 145 years, the University has carried forward a tradition rooted in academic excellence, leadership, perseverance, and service. Today, Southern University serves as the flagship institution of the Southern University System—the only historically Black university system in the United States—and continues to develop generations of leaders across education, business, science, law, public service, athletics, and the arts.
